Turning 15 over the summer on a family fishing vacation in Alaska is not exactly ideal for most girls but her mom and I put our heads together and decided to make Jackie’s birthday extra special. I had some mini-hat & mustache bash party ideas before we left Arizona so I smuggled the party goods up in my luggage. She had no clue what we were planning for her!
The location was a fishing cabin on the Kenai River and the guest of honor spent her day in hip waders catching sockeye salmon while we put the party pieces together!
When she arrived for dinner, she was so surprised and totally thrilled with her party hat, satin sash and pink mustache!
We invited friends from around the river camp and EVERYONE (even the guys) got into the mustaches and photo props!
In addition to the fun wearables, we brought mustache cups, napkins, straws, party picks to set the stage. We served flavored lemonades, Italian food – including a friend’s homemade moose lasagna – and set up a snack buffet full of sweet and salty treats. Cupcakes and mustache candles completed the birthday celebration! After dinner, the kids and teenagers took advantage of the photo booth to snap fun pictures to send to the kids back home! And then they were off for more fishing!
We had some interesting challenges due to the remote location and rustic outdoor setting – gale force winds played havoc with the tent, table and backdrops and forced the photo booth inside the cabin. Little green caterpillars kept dropping from the trees (but they did match the lime, black and white color scheme – lol!) But the worst was a passing moose pooped all over the outdoor party venue the night before so we had to do some serious scooping – ewwwww!!!
In spite of all of that, it’s so amazing that a few stick-on mustaches and some party hats can change a bummer birthday into a truly memorable event! I feel blessed to have been a part of it!
Til next time ~ Janna
